Gateway to the Stars: 50 Years Since Apollo

Gateway Arch National Park continues the 10th season of its successful Gateway to the Stars program on Saturday, August 17 with a special presentation highlighting the 50-year anniversary of the moon landing as well as telescope viewing of the moon and planets. At 8 p.m., Washington University scientist Dr. Ryan Clegg-Watkins will present “50 Years Since Apollo,” a look at the past, present and future of exploration of the moon. This program will be held in the Education Classroom, located on the lower level of the Arch Visitor Center.

Following the presentation and weather permitting, telescope viewing led by volunteers from the St. Louis Astronomical Society will take place at the Arch’s west entrance plaza until 10 p.m. The nearly full moon, Jupiter and Saturn will be visible.

The sky needs to be at least partly clear for telescope viewing to take place. Attendees should call 314-655-1708 the afternoon of the event for an update on the weather. The indoor presentation will take place rain or shine.
