While the safety of our guests and crew aboard the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch is the primary focus of all employees, there’s a certain wit and social skill we look for in all new team members. So we’ve come up with a little test to find who may be ready for a new part-time job or to start a career on the St. Louis Riverfront.

If you can correctly answer any of these riddles, then follow this link to APPLY TODAY and join our crew:

  1. A 10 foot rope ladder hangs over the side of a boat with the bottom rung on the surface of the water. The rungs are one foot apart, and the tide goes up at the rate of 6 inches per hour. How long will it be until three rungs are covered?
  2. You walk onto a bridge and you see a boat full of people, but there is not a single person on it. How is that possible?
  3. Two people are standing on the bank of a river looking forward to crossing to the other side. There is one boat with a capacity for one person. The two people managed to cross the river safely. How did they do it?
  4. Captain Ali is the captain of the ship. The captain of the ship is Captain Ali. Guess the name of the ship.
  5. A girl went over to the U.S. on the 4th of July and partied for 3 days and came back on the 4th of July. How did she do that?

ANSWERS BELOW:

  1. Never. The boat will rise with tide.
  2. They’re all married.
  3. They were on opposite sides of the river.
  4. The name of the ship is What.
  5. She went over on the date of the 4th of July and came home on the boat called the 4th of July.

7 Things We’re Thankful For in 2019 https://www.gatewayarch.com/7-things-were-thankful-for-in-2019/ Wed, 27 Nov 2019 15:45:53 +0000 https://www.gatewayarch.com/?p=13022 We’re grateful every day to call St. Louis “home.” This holiday season has us reflecting on what a truly awesome year 2019 has been.

We’re grateful every day to call St. Louis “home.” This holiday season has us reflecting on what a truly awesome year 2019 has been. It might seem like Thanksgiving is all about the delicious food and door-buster shopping deals but be sure to take the time to tell the ones you love what you’re thankful for! We’ll go first…

  • Gloria met Stanley. Against all odds, the St. Louis Blues became Stanley Cup Champions for the first time in franchise history, resulting in the biggest celebration this city has seen in decades… under the Gateway Arch, of course!

  • We experienced another Red October as the Cardinals made it to the National League Championship Series.

  • In more sports news, we welcomed Major League Soccer to the Lou.

  • We gained a new friend that graces our skyline… the St. Louis Wheel!

  • The Gateway Arch celebrated another birthday in October, making it officially 54 years old!

  • Grandma Joy (@GrandmaJoysRoadTrip on Instagram) visited Gateway Arch National Park earlier this month. She and her grandson Brad are on a mission to visit all 61 national parks. So far, they’ve crossed 49 off their list!

  • As much as the St. Louis weather keeps us on our toes, we must admit we’re thankful for that beautiful mid-November snow that left us with stunning photos of “the clash of the seasons.”

Happy Thanksgiving, STL!

This time of year, St. Louis is rampant with commercial haunted houses full of teens in masks and gallons of fake blood. But if you’re looking for a real fright this Halloween, pay a visit to one of these truly haunted places around the Lou.

The Chase Park Plaza

[Photo Credit: The Chase Park Plaza Royal Sonesta Hotel]

A man in a tuxedo is often seen wandering the halls of The Chase Park Plaza at night, particularly when there aren’t many guests in the hotel. He is thought to be Chase Ulman, the hotel’s builder. He was most often seen while the hotel was under construction, perhaps checking up on the hotel he built to ensure everything was up to par. Another famous ghost of The Chase is the red-haired lady in a white dress who wanders the third floor. Legend has it, she leapt out a window to her death on her wedding night in the 1930s. While neither of these ghosts are harmful, they do manage to startle those who see them.

Campbell House Museum

The Campbell house was built in 1851, and in 1943, the house opened as a museum of history and decorative arts in mid-Victorian America. Many people have reported strange experiences, including a woman who very clearly felt a hand on her back to push her along. Then there’s the mystery of the Kennedy half-dollars, kept in a bowl on the mantelpiece. Over the last four years, those half-dollars appear sporadically on the top step outside the building and no one seems to know why or how they get there.

Jefferson Barracks and Cemetery

Built in 1863, Jefferson Barracks became the site of a National Cemetery in 1866. Over the last century, soldiers have heard ghostly footsteps, watched a light turn itself on and off, and been confronted by the apparition of a guard with “a bullet hole in his head running red with blood.”

Zombie Road

Officially known as Lawler Ford Road, this haunted trail was originally constructed in the late 1860s to gain access to the Meramec River and the railroad tracks located alongside it. Legend has it that Della Hamilton McCullough, wife of a local judge, was hit by a train and died in 1876. The area has since been turned into a biking and jogging trail, riddled with eerie sounds, inexplicable noises and disembodied footsteps believed to belong to Mrs. McCullough.

The Exorcist House, Bel-Nor

Throughout March and April of 1949, priests worked to cast an evil spirit out of a 14-year-old boy. They eventually moved him to the Alexian Brothers Hospital where they completed the exorcism. Following, the boy returned home, and the room at the hospital was locked up after several reports of blasts of cold air and flickering lights. Although the hospital was torn down and replaced, the house still stands.

Lemp Mansion

[Photo Credit: Lemp Mansion Restaurant & Inn]

Known as one of the most haunted places in the country, St. Louisans who love all things scary know The Lemp Mansion is the place to go around Halloween. This beer-brewing family has a dark history of mysterious deaths, many of which took place in what is now the Lemp Mansion Restaurant & Inn. Stay overnight in the bedrooms that were once occupied by the Lemp family themselves … if you dare.

Happy Halloween!
